Meeting Minutes January 2015

Town and Country Quilters’ Guild
Meeting Minutes
 January 14, 2015
Present: 38 members
Welcome back by Linda to a very animated group, and a query re quilting resolutions for the year. A range of responses from “none” to completion of a specific project or cleaning out a sewing room created a general “buzz”.

·        Library Report: nothing to report. Discussion re: the purchase of several more plastic tubs to hold new books, or investigate the possibility of purchasing a cabinet with lock to house the books and alleviate the hauling of books back and forth into storage. Linda will seek permission from the hall administrators to see if this is a viable option, and report back at the next meeting.
·        Membership: Helen asked if members would permit their email addresses being forwarded to all; no objections. Minutes will be posted on our blog by Janet and Helen will also circulate the minutes to all members each month.
·        Yard sale? – Linda asked if members would be interested in having a yard sale of fabrics, books, anything related to quilting. It was suggested we hold this during Port Williams’ community yard sale, third Saturday in June. Use money earned for a future fundraiser.
·        Round Robin: see Joann for next round of challenge.
·        Centreville Retreat: 4 spaces available for the January 30, 31st retreat.
Show and Tell:
·        Ginny E – large agave wall hanging from inspirational photo from Huntington Library
·        Marie A: project from Quilt Canada W/S, Mystical Castle
·        Debbie M: two quilts for Quilts of Valour – one Norweigan Woods and another modern quilt made of sample swatches.
·        Elizabeth B: leftover fabric in mauve palette for 1 year old grand-daughter.
·        Vanessa A: retreat project with crow and spectacular sunflowers
·        Ruth P: wool doily
·        Helen A: samples of Mola quilting from Panama; reversible runner
·        Ann M: sampler quilt in warm tones
·        Pat Tr:  completed Retreat project with Karen Henry
·        Ruth B: lunch bag made from pattern by Victoriana Quilt designs
·        Kate M: recommended a stop at the new design shop in Wolfville to view quilting pieces of faces; mystery technique; see if you can guess
·        Faye B:  Large Dahlia hanging and applique Rose of Sharon table runner
·        Barb L: 2 slab quilts for practice of machine quilting; one scrap and one Kaffe Fassett pattern
Program: Resources
·        Cathy B– thanked everyone for their contributions for the homeless at the December meeting. Recipients were very appreciative. A tool Tote as demonstrated by Esther Kaulkman will be scheduled for February. Cathy also reviewed a recommended book for beginners, Singer’s Quilting Bible to answer a great many of your questions, giving examples throughout book.
·        Leah M– reviewed several magazines she uses. Create and Decorate – for penny rugs, rug-hooking, painting, and primitive art. Leah frequently uses recycled items from Frenchy’s for her woolen pieces. Also recommended: Urban Country Quilts for cotton and wool projects – we have three copies in the library. Leah passed around samples of projects she has made from these magazines.
·        Dawna D – Quilting Arts magazine is a favourite resource. The techniques shown prods her interest to develop her own spin on the articles i.e. glue resist and painting, curved piecing, painting on fabric, 3 D flowers, and Dawna showed examples of her completed works. Enjoys American Quilter and Art Quilt Studio, and PBS TV Quilting Arts.
Next meeting will be on February 11, 2015 at 7 PM.
